Explore the profound message of John 3:16 and discover the true meaning of salvation according to the Bible.
John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
At howtogettoheaven.com, our mission is to guide people in understanding what it means to have eternal life and the remarkable difference between Christianity and other religions.
Salvation is a gift from God. It is not something that we earn. We don't work for it. It's God's law that we broke and it's God that decides how this lawbreaking can be forgiven. God is the author of life and can bring new life to people who are spiritually dead.
God loves His creation and wants to dwell with us. God doesn't love us because we are important or special. We are important and special because God loves us. Our sin prevents our access to God. Sin equals disobedience to God. We have all sinned, therefore, we all need God to save us. We must recognize that we have sinned, we are guilty and we deserve to be found guilty by God.
It's our sin that is the problem but God provides the solution. The solution to the sin problem in the Old Testament was the sacrificing of animals. This was a sign of what God would later do in the New Testament when He gave His own Son as a sacrifice for our sins. Jesus willingly went to the cross for us.
The only solution to our sin problem is Jesus. Jesus is the Son of God but he is also God the Son. God shed His OWN blood to pay for OUR sins. Jesus didn't die as a martyr, standing up for what he believed in. Jesus isn't the victim of a crime, simply murdered by those who hated him. Jesus died as a substitute sacrifice. He took our place and died for our sins. He was buried and then came back to life, resurrected three days later. This was proof of his divinity, that he is God, and it fulfilled Biblical prophesy that he is the Messiah.
Salvation, eternal life, and everlasting life all mean the same thing. It means death is not the end. We can live eternally in Heaven with God at no cost to us. It is a gift offered to all mankind. This gift can be received OR rejected. If rejected, then a person will have to stand before God and He will judge them according to their sins. No one can survive the judgment. To receive the gift of everlasting life, a person must put their faith in who Jesus Christ is and in what he did.
This is more than just believing that Jesus is God and died and rose for our sins, as a fact. It means to place your faith and your dependence on Jesus. It is not trying to work or be good enough to earn your way to Heaven. This is impossible. You must put your faith in who Christ is and what he did and believe that this alone is the way to Heaven. A good way to think about it is this: If someone asks you "How do you get to Heaven?" the answer would be "Because Jesus Christ died for my sins and rose again. He is my savior. I believe this and I put my faith in this truth."
Why would we perish? Because our sin is that destructive. It's in our nature. We aren't sinners because we sin, we sin because we are sinners. A just and holy God would be obligated to judge us for our sins. This 'perish' is everlasting torment. Instead of being with God for eternity, you are separated from God for eternity. God would rather forgive us than punish us. That forgiveness is offered to everyone who puts their faith in Christ.
This is what we receive when we place our faith in Christ. The Bible describes this as eternity with God in a place where there is no pain, no death, no suffering. We will live with God forever along with everyone else who has put their faith in Christ. It is a time of everlasting peace, of everlasting joy, the likes of which we can not fully understand. It's worth it. Jesus died for YOU so that this gift can be offered to YOU.
Will YOU receive it?
